A spray polyurethane foam roof is only as long-lived as the coating that protects the foam. Embedding roofing granules in the final coat adds a mineral armor layer on top of that coating. It is a common upgrade in hail country, on roofs with heavy foot traffic, and where birds peck at foam. It also has costs: weight, lower reflectivity on some roofs and more work to recoat later. Here is how to decide.

Quick answer

Spray foam roof granules are mineral or ceramic-coated roofing granules broadcast into the wet final coat of an SPF roof coating. They improve UV, hail, puncture and foot-traffic resistance and can extend the time between recoats. The trade-offs are added weight and cost, a rougher surface that holds dirt, possible loss of reflectivity compared with a smooth white coating, and more prep when the roof is recoated. They are worth it on roofs that face hail, traffic or birds.

Why add granules to a foam roof?

Protect

UV shielding

Granules shade the elastomeric coating so it erodes more slowly.

Armor

Hail and puncture

The mineral layer spreads impact and resists punctures from hail, dropped tools and debris.

Wildlife

Bird and traffic damage

A granulated surface discourages birds from pecking foam and holds up under foot traffic.

How granules are applied

  1. Spray the foam

Apply SPF to the specified thickness and slope.

  2. Base coat

Apply the elastomeric base coat the same day the foam is sprayed when possible.

  3. Final coat

Apply the topcoat at full specified thickness.

  4. Broadcast granules

While the topcoat is wet, broadcast granules evenly at the rate the coating maker specifies.

  5. Cure and sweep

After cure, sweep or blow off loose granules.

  6. Inspect

Check for bare spots and recoat as needed.

Field noteGranules do not replace coating thickness. A thin coating under a heavy layer of granules still fails early. Measure the coating first.
Where it fits

When granules are worth it

Recommended

Hail-prone regions

Roofs in areas with frequent hail.

Recommended

Heavy traffic roofs

Rooftop equipment and frequent service visits.

Recommended

Bird pressure

Roofs where birds peck exposed foam.

Optional

Cool-roof goals

Use white or reflective granules, or keep a smooth white coating if reflectivity is the priority.

FAQ

Spray foam roof granules questions

Why put granules on a spray foam roof?

To add UV, hail, puncture and foot-traffic protection to the coating that protects the foam, and to discourage birds.

Do granules make a foam roof last longer?

They can extend coating life by shielding it from UV and impact, but only when the coating underneath is applied at full thickness.

Do granules reduce roof reflectivity?

Standard colored granules can lower reflectivity compared with a smooth white coating. White or reflective granules reduce that effect.

How are granules applied to a foam roof?

They are broadcast evenly into the final coating while it is still wet, then loose granules are removed after cure.

Can you recoat a foam roof with granules?

Yes. Loose granules are removed, the surface is cleaned and primed as needed, and a new coating is applied.
