Landscaping Projects designers and contractors have discovered a new tool to add to their arsenal called Polyurea. Polyurea is an elastomer substance derived from step-growth polymerization that creates an effective primary containment liner for polyurea ponds, fountains, and lots of water features. By definition, a polyurea solution contains various types of polymers. Not sure what that means exactly? The best way to describe it is this solution is created when different chemicals or chemical mixtures go through a unique process.
The advantage of Polyurea is that it is flexible and versatile. It can expand and contract depending on the temperature. At the same time, it is strong and adds a protective sealant to different surfaces. Polyurea coatings create a waterproof outer shield — perfect for a water feature! This not only means correcting cracks but avoiding them before they start.
There are a few major reasons it is important to protect landscaping projects with Polyurea. Here are some that immediately come to mind:
Many landscape projects also include spectacular water gardens. A water feature in any landscaping can be beautiful and refreshing. But, they also need the protection that Polyurea and polyurethane can offer.
Polyurea coatings are perfect for creating polyurea ponds because they’re seamless, durable, flexible, waterproof, low maintenance, and environmentally friendly to fish and plants. Water gardens are often comprised of stone or concrete. However, neither substance is waterproof. As a result, it’s not unusual for koi ponds or fountains to crack and crumble. This can be bad news for any fish you may have! Of course, a way to prevent catastrophe is to treat the water garden with the proper coating.
When applying to dirt, Polyurea is sprayed over commonly used geotextile material. Using Polyurea on geotextiles reinforces the wall and eliminates leaks through the fabric.
Polyurea preserves the concrete and reduces maintenance costs because it’s easily cleaned by pressure washing.
Its superior strength and elastomeric properties are needed for bridging cracks in concrete.
Aquariums and water gardens have also found great benefits with Polyurea. It can form properly custom-prepared-shaped walls and themed ornaments. The sprayed-applied, water-resistant line is available in various colors with a quick return to service installation.
Polyurea coatings also add a visual appeal to landscaping projects. They can be applied in neutral shades or decorative colors designed to match the rest of the environment.
At ArmorThane, we have seen many cases where polyurethane and polyurea coatings improved landscaping projects. Have questions? Contact us to see how we can help!
