A spray foam rig is a self-contained mobile shop: a trailer or truck that carries everything needed to spray polyurethane foam or polyurea at a job site, including the proportioner, heated hose, generator, air supply and material drums. We design and build mobile coating rigs in Springfield, Missouri and run them on our own projects, so this guide explains what goes in a rig, how to size one, and what to ask before you buy.

Quick answer

A spray foam rig is an enclosed trailer or box truck fitted with a heated plural-component proportioner, heated hose, spray gun, generator, air compressor, air dryer, transfer pumps and drum storage. Most new contractors start with an enclosed trailer around 20 feet long; larger 24 to 26 foot gooseneck rigs carry more material and a second system. A well-specified rig can spray both spray foam insulation and polyurea coatings, which widens the work you can sell.

What is inside a spray foam rig

Heart

Proportioner

Heats and pumps the A and B components at a fixed ratio and pressure. Our standard rig uses a PMC PHX-40.

Power

Generator

Runs the proportioner heaters, hose heat, compressor and lights. 45 kW on our standard rig.

Air

Compressor and dryer

Supplies clean, dry air to the gun and transfer pumps. 23 CFM on our standard rig.

Delivery

Heated hose

Keeps material at temperature to the gun. 100 ft standard, extendable for large buildings.

Material

Drum storage and transfer pumps

Holds and feeds A and B drums, with heating to keep material in range in cold weather.

Safety

Fresh air and ventilation

Supplied-air respirator system, ventilation, fire extinguishers and spill kit.

One rig for spray foam and polyurea

Spray foam and polyurea are both plural-component, heated, high-pressure materials. With the right proportioner, heated hose and gun setup, the same rig can insulate a building in the morning and spray a bedliner, roof coating or tank lining in the afternoon. That is why many of our rig buyers sell both. See polyurea spray rigs and our polyurea spray guide.

Field noteThe two upgrades that save the most headaches are a generator sized for full heat load in winter and a drum heating plan. Cold material is behind most bad spray days.
Buying

What to ask before you buy a rig

  1. What will you spray?

Open-cell, closed-cell, roofing foam, polyurea or all of them. This sets the proportioner output and heat.

  2. How far from the rig?

Hose length and heat capacity determine how far you can reach on large buildings.

  3. Generator sizing

Confirm the generator covers proportioner, hose heat and compressor at full load.

  4. Climate

Insulation, drum heat and heaters for cold-weather spraying.

  5. Training and support

Who trains your crew, and who answers the phone when the rig is down?

  6. Service and parts

Parts availability for the proportioner, gun and generator.

FAQ

Spray foam rig questions

What is a spray foam rig?

A trailer or truck fitted with everything needed to spray polyurethane foam on site: a heated plural-component proportioner, heated hose, spray gun, generator, air compressor and drum storage.

What size trailer do I need for a spray foam rig?

Many contractors start with an enclosed trailer around 20 feet long. Larger 24 to 26 foot gooseneck trailers carry more material and can fit a second spray system.

Can a spray foam rig spray polyurea?

Yes, if the proportioner, hose and gun are set up for polyurea pressure and temperature. Many rigs spray both, which adds bedliner, roofing and lining work.

What generator size does a spray foam rig need?

It depends on the proportioner and hose heat. Our standard 20 ft rig uses a 45 kW generator to run the proportioner, heated hose and compressor at full load.

Do you provide training with a rig?

Yes. ArmorThane provides equipment and coatings training and ongoing technical support.
