Searching "undercoating near me" gets you a map full of tire shops, detailers, dealers, rustproofing franchises and spray-on bedliner shops, all quoting different products at prices from $150 to over $1,000. They are not selling the same thing. This guide is how we would pick a local undercoating shop: decide which type of undercoating your vehicle actually needs, ask the questions that separate careful shops from fast ones, and compare quotes on cost per year of protection instead of sticker price. Two tools below do the matching and the math. When you are ready, our applicator locator shows certified ArmorThane applicators in your area.

Quick answer

Pick the type first, then the shop. Annual oil or lanolin sprays suit salt-belt daily drivers and vehicles that already have some rust; rubberized or wax coatings suit cleaner vehicles you want to treat less often; thick polyurea suits work trucks and off-road vehicles that take impact. Choose a shop that lifts the vehicle, washes and dries the underside, removes loose rust, masks brakes and exhaust, treats inside frame rails and rockers, and puts its re-treatment schedule and warranty terms in writing.

Our deeper guides cover each family in detail: rubberized undercoating and the truck undercoating guide. The short version from the coatings side: thin, creeping oils are the best answer for a vehicle that is already rusting, because they wick into seams and displace water. Hard films, whether rubberized, polyurea or paint, protect best when they go onto clean, sound metal, and do real harm when sprayed over flaking rust that keeps corroding underneath.

Rules of thumb from our technical team: creeping oils for vehicles with existing rust or heavy salt exposure, hard films only over clean sound metal, polyurea where impact is the main threat, and no dealer package for a new car unless you want it for resale reasons.

    The local options

    Who does undercoating near you

We do not publish a list of every undercoating shop, and we would be suspicious of any page that claims to. What we can tell you is what each kind of local business usually does well, so you can search smarter and know what to ask.

    Rustproofing specialists

    Dedicated oil-spray shops

Shops that do nothing but annual oil or lanolin treatments usually have the drill-and-plug routine for doors and rockers down pat. Ask about the warranty conditions; some require a treatment every year to stay valid.

    Coating shops

    Spray-on bedliner and coatings shops

The best place for polyurea or other hard-film undercoating, rocker and wheel well protection, because they already own plural-component spray rigs and do surface prep daily. Many also offer rubberized coatings. Our bedliner near me guide covers how to vet them.

    General repair

    Tire, lube and repair shops

Convenient and often cheap. Quality depends entirely on whether they lift the vehicle, clean it first and mask components, or just spray a can's worth on the visible frame.

    Dealers

    New-vehicle dealers

Packages are typically the most expensive way to buy undercoating, and Consumer Reports advises skipping rustproofing on modern new cars. If you want it, buy it after the sale from a specialist.

    Restoration

    Frame-off and restoration shops

For a classic or a frame with real damage: blasting, rust repair, then a durable coating. Expensive, and the only honest fix when metal is gone.

    Certified applicators

    ArmorThane applicators

Independent businesses we supply and train. Many spray polyurea undercoating and rocker protection along with bedliners; services vary, so call first. Find one on our applicator locator.

    Vetting a shop

Questions to ask any undercoating shop near you

Good shops answer these without hesitating. Vague answers to the first four are the ones that matter most, because prep and coverage are where undercoating jobs succeed or fail.

    1. "Exactly what product will you spray?"

Get the product name, not just "rubberized" or "oil". Ask for the data sheet. You want to know whether it is a creeping oil, a wax, an asphalt or rubber coating, or a polyurea, and what it is rated for.

    2. "How do you prepare the underside?"

The right answer includes lifting the vehicle, pressure washing, letting it dry fully, and scraping or wire-wheeling loose rust. Hard coatings need more: degreasing, removing flaking scale and old peeling coatings, and a primer where the product calls for one.

    3. "What do you mask, and what stays uncoated?"

Brakes, rotors, exhaust, catalytic converters, sensors, driveshafts and drain holes should be protected. A shop that sprays over drain holes is building a rust trap.

    4. "Do you treat inside the frame rails, rockers and doors?"

Most rust-through starts inside closed sections. Ask how they get in there: existing access holes, drilled holes with plugs, or extension wands. External spraying alone misses it.

    5. "How long until I need it again, and what does that cost?"

Oils are typically renewed yearly. Ask for the re-treatment interval and price in writing. That number goes into the quote comparison below.

    6. "What does the warranty require and cover?"

Many warranties require you to come back every year. ThePricer notes that Krown's warranty, for example, carries a $5,000 lifetime ceiling on covered repairs and requires continued annual applications. Read the conditions before you count on it.

    7. "Can I see a vehicle you did last year?"

Photos of fresh work prove nothing. A shop confident in its product will show you how it looks after a winter.

Compare local undercoating quotes by cost per year

A $150 annual spray and a $600 coating that lasts several years can cost the same over the time you own the vehicle. Enter up to three quotes with how often each shop says it needs redoing. The defaults are example quotes, not prices from any shop near you.

    Before you book

    Red flags, timing and aftercare

    Red flag

"We spray right over the rust"

Hard coatings over flaking scale seal the corrosion in with the moisture that feeds it. The rust keeps going and you cannot see it. Over rust, you want a creeping oil, or real rust removal first.

    Red flag

    Same-day wash and spray

A frame that was pressure washed an hour ago is still wet inside the rails and seams. Ask how long they let it dry. Oil sprays tolerate some moisture; hard films do not.

    Ask again

No product name or data sheet

If the shop cannot tell you what is in the gun, you cannot compare quotes or know what to touch up later.

    Ask again

Warranty with conditions you did not hear

Annual return visits, inspection fees and exclusions for existing rust are common. Get the terms in writing.

    Good sign

    They turn work away

A shop that tells you a hard coating is wrong for your rusty frame, or that a new car does not need the dealer package, is a shop you can trust with your truck.

    Good sign

A dedicated lift and wash bay

Undercoating done on the ground with a creeper and a can is not the same service. Look for a lift, a wash area and a covered space to cure.

    When to book

Book before the salt trucks run. In the snow belt that means early fall, when the underside is dry, temperatures are mild enough for coatings to cure, and the vehicle has not yet picked up a winter's worth of salt. Shops get busy in October and November, so call ahead. Undercoating applied in spring is not wasted, but it means the vehicle went through a winter unprotected, and salt residue needs to be washed off thoroughly first.

Aftercare that makes any undercoating last longer

    • Rinse the underside during and after salt season, especially after storms. AAA's survey put the average rust repair at $490 per vehicle; washing is far cheaper.
    • Look underneath once a year with a light. Touch up chips in hard coatings before water gets under the edge.
    • Keep drain holes open in doors and rockers so water can get out.
    • Protect impact zones such as rockers, wheel wells and the leading edge of the frame. On work trucks, these are where a thick coating such as polyurea earns its cost; see ArmorLiner polyurea.
    FAQ

    Undercoating near me questions

How much does undercoating cost near me?

Prices vary by region and vehicle size, but ThePricer's 2026 guide puts straightforward oil or lanolin treatments at $150 to $400, rubberized or wax coatings at $250 to $500, descaling plus oil at $300 to $800, and dealer packages at $800 to over $1,000. Polyurea undercoating is quoted per vehicle by the applicator.

    Is undercoating worth it?

In salt-belt and coastal areas, usually yes, especially for vehicles you plan to keep. AAA found US drivers spent $15.4 billion over five years repairing rust from road salt. For a new car in a mild climate, Consumer Reports says dealer rustproofing is not worth it.

Which is better, oil or rubberized undercoating?

Oil creeps into seams and displaces water, which makes it the better choice for vehicles with existing rust, but it must be renewed yearly. Rubberized coatings last longer and deaden noise, but only belong on clean, sound metal. On rusty frames they can trap moisture.

How often should a car be undercoated?

Oil and lanolin treatments are typically renewed every year. Wax and hard coatings last longer but should be inspected annually and touched up where chipped. Follow the interval the shop puts in writing.

Can you undercoat a car that already has rust?

Yes, if it is the right product. Remove loose scale, then use a creeping oil that soaks into the rust and seams. Hard coatings need the rust removed and the metal cleaned first. Metal that is rusted through needs repair, not coating.

    Does ArmorThane do undercoating?

We manufacture polyurea and polyurethane coatings and supply independent certified applicators. Many of them spray polyurea undercoating, wheel well and rocker protection alongside spray-on bedliners. Services vary, so use our applicator locator and call the nearest one to confirm.

When is the best time to get undercoating?

Early fall, before road salt season, when the underside is dry and temperatures suit curing. Book ahead; rustproofing shops are busiest just before winter.

Should I let the dealer undercoat my new car?

Usually not. Consumer Reports advises against dealer rustproofing on modern new cars, which come with factory corrosion protection, and packages often cost $800 or more. If you want extra protection, a specialist shop will usually do more for less.
