Pontoon boat flooring takes more abuse than any floor in your house: sun, rain, wet feet, fish and a deck that flexes on every wave. Pick the wrong surface and you'll re-floor. Let water sit on the plywood underneath and you'll re-deck too.

Quick answer

For most owners, the best pontoon boat flooring is marine vinyl or woven vinyl glued to 3/4-inch treated plywood. Rolls cost $10–$42 per running foot, about $230–$925 for a 22-ft deck. Carpet is cheapest but holds water. EVA foam is softest. A sprayed polyurea non skid deck coating is seamless, at about $5–$12 per sq ft installed. Price your deck or find your best fit.

Below, every common option is compared on heat, grip, rot, cleanup and cost, using prices read in September 2026. A word about who's writing: ArmorThane, founded in 1989 and based in Springfield, Missouri, makes polyurea coatings and trains the certified applicators who spray boat decks. We don't make vinyl, carpet or foam, and for many pontoons one of those is the right answer.

Your options

Pontoon flooring options, compared

Almost every pontoon floor is one of these surfaces over 3/4-inch treated plywood screwed to the aluminum cross-members. Some builders use all-aluminum decks instead, and coatings can go over plywood or aluminum.

Harris puts foam-backed vinyl on its own pontoons for "value for construction, appearance and maintenance." For aluminum pontoon boat flooring, Veranda builds all-aluminum decks because a "wood deck can hold moisture and increase in weight over time."

Pontoon flooring ideas that work

Teak-look woven vinyl gives an older boat a new-boat look. EVA foam pads at the helm and swim ladder add soft, grippy spots without re-flooring. On fishing and rental boats, set a sprayed deck's texture by zone: lighter where people go barefoot, heavier where they fish. And pick a light color if the boat sits in the sun. The U.S. Department of Energy says conventional roofs can reach 150°F or more on a sunny afternoon while reflective ones stay more than 50°F cooler; a sunny deck follows the same physics.

The most-asked question

Marine vinyl vs woven vinyl

Vinyl pontoon boat flooring means two different products. Solid vinyl is a printed or embossed sheet, often foam-backed, from about 25 to 80 mils. Woven vinyl is PVC-coated yarn on a cushion backing and much thicker: PMI's woven lines are 144 mils.

Which one is hotter?

Nobody has published a neutral test. PMI says its woven "stays cool on the bare foot even in direct sunlight." G-Floor's maker says woven registered 13 degrees hotter than its non-woven vinyl, with no test conditions given. Harris says both can get warm. Color is the one thing physics settles: light surfaces stay cooler.

Warranty reality checkMariDeck's vinyl warranty is prorated over two years and excludes "fading, abrasion" and "moisture from the sub floor." Woven Flexa offers a 10-year limited warranty. Neither covers rot in the plywood, so the floor is only as good as the deck under it.

Pick solid vinyl for fishing, rentals or the lowest price per foot. Pick woven for cruising and swimming. Either way, a glued sheet keeps rain off the plywood better than carpet.

Coatings

Spray-on and roll-on deck coatings

A non skid deck coating replaces the floor covering with a textured liquid-applied surface. Know which of these three you're being quoted.

What a sprayed pontoon deck gets you

Our marine coating systems are 100% solids, zero-VOC polyureas applied as "seamless, slip-resistant decking over fiberglass, gelcoat, aluminum or plywood." Grit broadcast into the wet film "tunes traction from lightly textured to heavily aggressive." See our non-slip coatings and SureGrip soft polyurea, our highest-friction polyurea. It's the approach behind our lobster boat deck coatings and polyurea houseboat coatings.

Three things to ask before anyone sprays

  • Is the plywood compatible? Pontoon plywood sellers say CCA-treated sheets "should not be coated or treated before installation," and one floor-coating maker bars marine plywood entirely. Ask for the coating maker's primer and an adhesion test. Floor-coating makers also call for screws every 6 inches at panel edges, reinforced joints and two primer coats on porous plywood.
  • Will it be UV-stable? Aromatic polyurea yellows in sun "without compromising its physical performance" (see what is aromatic polyurea). On a sunny deck, ask for an aliphatic top layer such as color-stable ArmorFlex UV.
  • How heavy? At 60 mils, spray polyurea weighs about 0.33 lb per sq ft, close to the 0.35 lb of a premium felt-backed woven vinyl.

Roll-on products have a place too. On a small aluminum fishing boat, a gallon or two of textured roll-on is a fair weekend project; Boating magazine's Durabak deck took two gallons and about 13.5 hours. Our roll-on bedliner guide compares thin films with a sprayed coat. Don't expect one to seal a pontoon deck, though. Spray polyurea itself isn't DIY: its precursors can be dangerous, as we explain in why DIY polyurea is a mistake.

Tell us how you use the boat, where it lives and what matters most. The selector weighs each floor on the sourced pros and cons above and explains its pick.

Decision helper

Which flooring fits my pontoon?

A guide, not a guarantee. The weighting is ours; the reasons come from builders, flooring makers and coating data.

What matters most
Woven vinylDIY or shop

Why woven vinyl: Woven vinyl is soft and textured, and Bennington says its switch to woven was “mostly driven by the consumer.” Woven vinyl can be power washed and scrubbed. Runner-up: marine vinyl.

Plywood rot and deck replacement

Pontoon boat flooring replacement often turns into a plywood job when the old vinyl comes up, so walk the deck before you order. Soft or spongy spots, flex between cross-members and bolts that won't stay tight can all point to wet plywood. The usual culprits are carpet holding water against the wood and water seeping up at seams and fastener holes.

What to buy

3/4 in CCA-treated plywood

CCA-treated Douglas fir marine plywood, 4 ft × 8 ft or 8 ft 6 in, $125–$145.99 a sheet: "the same plywood used on most new pontoon boats." PMI warns copper sulfate alternatives "delaminate within years."

How many sheets

One sheet per 4 ft of deck

Sheets run across the deck, so a 24-ft deck takes six. Pontoon Specialists' plywood kits run $500 (16 × 8 ft) to $810 (24 ft × 8 ft 6 in), plus shipping.

Fastening

Screws or elevator bolts

At least six self-tapping screws per cross-member where sheets join and five on center cross-members, or three and two elevator bolts (Pontoon Specialists).

Seams

Butyl tape at the joints

PMI's butyl deck joint tape ($20 for 50 ft) "prevents water from seeping up between deck boards," the most rot-prone spot on the deck.

Plywood life claims vary: PMI says "rated to last 50 years," PontoonStuff offers a 6-year warranty and Pontoon Specialists a limited lifetime one. Keeping water off it matters more. Rebuilding a small aluminum boat's floor instead? Check the flotation too; boat pour foam should be tested to 33 CFR 183.114, as our two-part pour foam guide explains.

Shop: Oakland Shrink Wrap and Marine Services, $127 per ft of boat ($152 premium vinyl), plywood extra at $400 a sheet. Spray: $5–$12 per sq ft floor benchmarks (HomeGuide, ArmorThane cost guide); no pontoon-specific price was published.

What's in a pontoon boat flooring kit

At PontoonStuff, carpet kits start at $376.99, vinyl kits run $664.99–$873.99 and complete deck kits $960.99–$1,457.99. Everything Pontoon's 24-ft re-deck kit ($1,653.74) is a good shopping list: six sheets of 3/4-inch 7-ply marine plywood, 100 stainless deck screws, 32 rail bolts with lock nuts, 32 rail risers, 3 gallons of roll-on glue and 24 ft of 80-mil vinyl.

Shop pricing varies most. The one shop we found that publishes rates charges $127 per foot of boat, $400 per plywood sheet and $5 per replacement fastener, so a 22-ft boat with six new sheets runs about $5,200. One cost guide puts professional marine flooring labor anywhere from $3 to $15 per sq ft.

Marinas and boat dealers

Every pontoon on your lot has a deck. Coat them yourself.

Boat and UTV dealers add sprayed decks and hull protection as a service line. We supply the polyurea, the equipment and on-site or virtual training that ends in certification. Turnkey systems start at $25,000, low-pressure 1:1 equipment from about $20,000, with third-party financing. No franchise fee, no dealership fee, no royalty.

Installation

How to replace pontoon flooring

These steps follow Pontoon Specialists' re-decking and vinyl guides, with PMI's notes on seams and adhesive.

  1. Photograph, then strip

Take "a lot of pictures," then remove furniture, fence and the old floor. Replace under-deck wiring and tighten under-deck hardware while it's open.

  2. Lay and fasten the plywood

Set sheets "square and properly centered on the cross-members," tape the seams with butyl and fasten: at least six screws per cross-member at joints and five on center cross-members.

  3. Glue at 60°F or warmer

Roll white marine glue on with a 3/8-inch or deeper nap and wait for the water to "flash out." Lay carpet when the glue is tacky but not yet clear.

  4. Roll, staple, trim

Roll the floor from the center out with a floor roller (a 12–16 inch board works), staple the edges where the aluminum edge cap will cover them and trim flush.

  5. Reinstall and keep it dry

Bolt the fence back on with rail risers, reinstall the furniture and keep the deck dry for at least 24 hours for carpet and "at least a few days" for vinyl.

Non-slip coating on a floor surface
Non-slip coatings get their grip from spray texture or broadcast aggregate.

If you're having it sprayed instead

The first two steps are the same. Then the applicator sands, cleans and primes the plywood, reinforces the joints, sprays the polyurea with grit broadcast into the wet film and adds an aliphatic top layer if the deck sees sun. Failures usually trace to prep: a coating that sets in seconds locks in contamination and moisture, and the surface should be at least 5°F above the dew point. As our marine page puts it, prep is "the single largest predictor of how long a marine coating lasts."

Care

Care and cleaning by material

Vinyl and woven

Hose weekly, scrub gently

Woven Flexa says vacuum or hose weekly, wash with mild soap and a soft brush, and use 1 cup of bleach and 1/4 cup of mild soap per gallon of water for tough stains.

Carpet

Dry it out

Carpet needs regular cleaning and ventilation to prevent mildew (Great Lakes Skipper). Open the cover on dry days.

EVA foam

Soap, water, stiff brush

Soap, water and a stiff brush, with Dek Magic for stubborn stains; clean spills promptly.

Coatings

Rinse and inspect

Hose off grit and check high-wear spots each season. An aliphatic top layer keeps the color.

Every deck

Keep water off the plywood

Check seams, edge cap and bolts; retighten loose fasteners and seal any new hole.

Salt water

Rinse after every trip

Rinse any floor with fresh water. Deck coatings aren't antifouling paint: polyurea "does not contain the biocides."

Pontoon boat flooring FAQ

What is the best flooring for a pontoon boat?

For most owners it's marine vinyl or woven vinyl glued to 3/4-inch treated plywood. Vinyl cleans easily and protects the plywood from moisture; woven adds a softer, textured feel. Carpet is cheaper but holds water and can mildew. EVA foam is softest, and sprayed polyurea is the seamless choice for fishing and rental boats.

How much does it cost to replace a pontoon boat floor?

Doing it yourself, vinyl or woven rolls cost about $10 to $42 per running foot in September 2026, or $230 to $925 for a 22-ft deck plus adhesive. Six new plywood sheets add about $810 to $876. One Michigan shop charges $127 per foot of boat to remove the old floor and install vinyl, plus $400 per plywood sheet.

Is vinyl or carpet better on a pontoon boat?

Vinyl, for most boats. Harris, which builds pontoons, uses foam-backed vinyl and notes that carpet is prone to mildew and hard to clean. Marine Fabricator says wet carpet holds moisture like a sponge. Carpet still makes sense on a covered or indoor-stored boat where comfort and price matter most.

Does vinyl pontoon flooring get hot in the sun?

It can. Harris says high temperatures can make both solid and woven vinyl warm, and sellers disagree about which is cooler without publishing test conditions. Color matters more: the U.S. Department of Energy says reflective roofs can stay more than 50 degrees F cooler in summer sun, so choose a light color for an uncovered boat.

What is woven vinyl pontoon flooring?

It's a mat of PVC-coated yarns over a cushion backing, sold in rolls about 8 ft 6 in wide. It's softer and more textured than solid vinyl, doesn't soak up water and can be power washed. Prices ran about $17.56 to $42 per running foot in September 2026.

What plywood is used on pontoon boat decks?

Most use 3/4-inch CCA-treated marine plywood, usually Douglas fir, in 4 ft by 8 ft or 4 ft by 8 ft 6 in sheets laid across the deck. Sellers priced it at $125 to $145.99 a sheet in September 2026. One seller warns that copper sulfate alternatives delaminate within years.

How do I know if my pontoon deck is rotten?

Walk the whole deck and press near the seams, fence posts and furniture bolts. Soft or spongy spots, flex between cross-members and bolts that won't stay tight usually mean wet or rotten plywood. Replace those sheets before installing any new flooring, because every floor needs a sound, dry deck.

Can you spray bedliner or polyurea on a pontoon deck?

Yes. A trained applicator can spray polyurea over sound plywood or aluminum for a seamless, textured deck. The plywood must be dry, tight and primed, and treated plywood needs the coating maker's primer and an adhesion test. Aromatic polyurea darkens in sun, so ask for an aliphatic top layer on uncovered boats.

What is a non skid deck coating?

It's a textured coating that adds grip to a deck. Options range from roll-on acrylic non-skid, which doesn't seal the surface, to one-part polyurethane liners at about 60 sq ft per gallon, to professionally sprayed polyurea that forms a seamless waterproof membrane with built-in texture.

How much does a boat floor coating cost?

A DIY roll-on such as Durabak 18 costs $159.95 a gallon and covers about 60 sq ft in two coats, about $2.67 per sq ft. Professionally sprayed polyurea floors run about $5 to $12 per sq ft installed on published floor benchmarks. No pontoon-specific price is published, so get a quote after an inspection.

How long does pontoon flooring last?

There's little neutral data. One vinyl maker offers a prorated 2-year warranty and a woven brand offers 10 years. SeaDek fabricators quote 5 to 7 years for EVA foam in harsh use. Plywood warranties range from 6 years to limited lifetime. Keeping water off the plywood matters more than the brand.

How do you clean pontoon boat flooring?

Hose vinyl and woven vinyl weekly and scrub with mild soap and a soft brush; one maker suggests 1 cup of bleach and a quarter cup of mild soap per gallon of water for tough stains. Carpet needs regular cleaning and time to dry. EVA foam cleans with soap, water and a stiff brush.
