A roll-on bedliner is the weekend version of a spray-in liner. Done well on a light-use truck, it protects the bed for a fraction of the price. Rushed, or asked to haul working loads, it can wear through or peel within a few years (here is how to remove a bedliner if it does).

Quick answer

A roll-on bedliner is a urethane or acrylic coating you brush and roll into the bed yourself, sold as a kit for about $80–$235. Plan on two coats: one gallon does a 5.5–6 ft bed, and an 8 ft bed needs more. Kits build roughly 10–40 mils; a professional spray-in liner is 125 mils or more and runs about $550–$650 on most full-size trucks. Size your kit or compare roll-on and spray-in.

A word about who's writing: ArmorThane makes ArmorLiner, a spray polyurea that certified applicators apply to truck beds. We don't sell a roll-on kit, so this guide sticks to what kit makers publish, what retailers charge and what owners report.

The basics

What is roll-on bedliner made of?

You apply a roll-on liner like paint, with a brush for corners and a textured roller for the rest; several kits can also be sprayed. The kits fall into three chemistry families, and the family decides how the coating handles sun, recoat times and when you can load the truck.

One-part

Open the can and roll

Herculiner is a solvent-based polyurethane with rubber granules. Durabak 18 is also one-part: "nothing else to mix in." No mix ratio to get wrong.

Water-based

Acrylic and rubberized

Rust-Oleum's coating is a styrenated acrylic carried in water and ethanol. Dupli-Color Bed Armor is a water-based rubberized polyurethane.

Two-part (2K)

Liner plus hardener

Raptor (3:1), Monstaliner (7:1), Al's Liner, SEM Rock-It XC and Herculiner's Professional kit. Mix at the right ratio and work inside the recoat window.

Aromatic or aliphatic: why the sun matters

Aromatic urethanes can chalk, fade or discolor in sunlight; aliphatic ones hold their color much better. Kit labels rarely say which you're buying. Monstaliner calls its liner aliphatic, and Durabak says the same of its product. Competitors describe Herculiner as aromatic, a claim we couldn't verify. Our explainer on aromatic polyurea covers the same trade-off in professional liners.

Is roll-on bedliner polyurea?None of the kits in this guide is sold as polyurea. Professional liners are polyurea or polyurethane/polyurea hybrids. Fast-set polyurea such as ArmorLiner gels in 6–10 seconds, far too quickly to roll, so it's sprayed with professional equipment.

From each maker's data sheet or product page and the retailer named, read September 27, 2026. Cure times apply at the maker's test temperature (77°F for Rust-Oleum, 68°F for Raptor).

A bigger coverage number usually means a thinner film. Al's Liner covers 44 sq ft per gallon because it builds 1/32 inch (about 31 mils) or more, about a third of Rust-Oleum's per-coat coverage. And "dry to the touch" (1–2 hours for most kits) means you can recoat, not load the bed.

Load it too soon and it fails earlyRaptor wants 7 days before regular use and no heavy loads until fully cured. Monstaliner reaches full cure at 7 days. Rust-Oleum asks for 5 days before heavy duty and 24 hours with no rain. One Rust-Oleum owner found the coating could be peeled off with a pocketknife at 24 hours.

60 sq ft, Herculiner roll-on kit, 2 coats: about 0.9 gal, so buy 1 kit for $109.99 (about $1.83 per sq ft). Recoat: 1–4 hours. Light use: 24 h; heavy loads: 24 h. Apply at 32–95°F. Herculiner says one gallon does a 6 ft bed in two coats and an 8 ft bed needs an extra quart; we rate it at 64 sq ft per gallon, which fits both. Budget about a quart of xylene, acetone or MEK for the prep wipe.

How we set the bed areas. Monstaliner (60 sq ft per gallon, one gallon for a 5.5–6 ft bed) and Dupli-Color (a 60–70 sq ft gallon does a 6 ft bed) put a short bed at about 60 sq ft. Herculiner's Professional kit covers about 80 sq ft and does an 8 ft bed in one coat, so a long bed is 80; Monstaliner's 1.5–2 gallons for 8 ft would be 90–120. The 6.5 ft figure is our straight-line estimate. Going over the rails adds about a quart (Monstaliner), or 15 sq ft.

Application

How to apply a roll-on bedliner

Every kit maker says it: the coating is only as good as the surface under it.

  1. Check the weather window

Herculiner goes on between 32°F and 95°F. Rust-Oleum needs 55°F or warmer, humidity below 85% and no rain for 24 hours. Herculiner's Professional kit wants 65–90°F.

  2. Strip and degrease

Wash off heavy dirt and degrease. Dupli-Color specifies wax-and-grease remover; Herculiner has you wipe with xylene, acetone or MEK and budget about a quart of solvent.

  3. Scuff or sand everything you'll coat

Rust-Oleum calls for 60–120 grit or its scuff pad, Monstaliner 120 grit on sound paint and 50–60 on heavy rust, Raptor 80–180 on bare metal, and Al's Liner 36 grit or coarser plus etching primer on metal. Deal with rust first; see repairing truck bed rust.

  4. Mask, then mix

Tape off the rails and tailgate edges. Mix two-part kits at their ratio: 3:1 for Raptor, 7:1 for Monstaliner, which ships with a drill mixer. Rust-Oleum says not to thin or tint.

  5. Cut in, then roll

Brush corners and seams first; Dupli-Color sells an aerosol for those spots. Then roll the floor and walls. KBS suggests a thin first coat and a slightly heavier second. Rolled Raptor builds less film than sprayed, so U-POL says to add coats.

  6. Second coat inside the window

    Raptor 60 minutes, Dupli-Color 1–3 hours, Herculiner 1–4, Rust-Oleum 3, Monstaliner 3–6 (24 at most, or scuff first).

  7. Wait out the cure

Light use at about 24 hours is typical. Heavy loads wait 48 hours for Dupli-Color, 72 for Al's Liner, 5 days for Rust-Oleum and 7 for Raptor and Monstaliner. Herculiner is fully cured in 24 hours.

Durability

How long does roll-on bedliner last?

No independent long-term test covers every kit. The claims, owner reports and one adhesion test point the same way: prep and cure time decide most of the result.

Herculiner owners

From one year to eight

On a 2018 forum thread, one owner said it looked good for about a year, then wore through; another said it peels after a few years without good prep. A third got about 8 years across two trucks with careful prep and a UV topcoat, though it scratches easily.

Rust-Oleum owners

Soft early, gray later

On an overlanding forum, one owner could peel it with a pocketknife at 24 hours, before full cure. Another's slider steps wore through in about six weeks. Coated rocker panels lasted years, but the black turned gray.

One adhesion test

Project Farm tested pull-off adhesion on bare and primed steel. We couldn't open the original video, so these figures come from Durabak's summary, and Durabak competes with the other two. Our takeaway is about prep, not brands: priming took Raptor from 48 lb to 425 lb.

The common failures are predictable: peeling from skipped scuffing or unprimed bare steel, wear-through where cargo slides over a thin film, gouges from loading before full cure, and graying from sun on a coating that isn't UV-stable.

The big decision

Roll-on vs spray-in bedliner

The real difference is thickness, and most of the rest follows from it: how much abuse the liner takes, how long the job takes and what it costs.

A mil is a thousandth of an inch. Published figures, not a side-by-side measurement.

By those figures, most roll-on films are roughly 3 to 12 times thinner than a 125-mil professional floor. That's the main reason a kit suits light use and a spray-in liner suits a bed that works. Thickness isn't everything, and even thick polyurea has limits, as our look at whether bedliner is bulletproof explains. For more, see spray-on bedliners vs DIY kits.

  • Regular work use. Thickness matters here. Choose a kit that builds more film (Monstaliner rates up to 40 dry mils in two rolled coats; Al’s Liner builds 1/32 inch or more) and add a coat where cargo slides.
  • Sound factory paint. The easy case: scuff it, clean it with the solvent or cleaner your kit specifies, then coat.
  • Cost favors the kit. Over 5 years the kit costs about $220 (2 applications) against $600 for a pro liner, not counting sandpaper, solvent or your time.

The comparison assumes one professional liner lasts as long as you keep the truck, as lifetime warranties like LINE-X's and Rhino's intend; get any applicator's terms in writing.

Buying guide

The best roll-on bedliner for your job

No independent test we found ranks every kit. Roadkill Customs compared 10 roll-on and 5 spray-can liners but didn't publish per-product scores. So instead of one winner, here's which kit fits which job.

Lowest cost

Rust-Oleum Truck Bed Coating

$79.99 a gallon at Harbor Freight, and two coats leave room to spare on a short bed. Trade-offs: 5 days before heavy duty, and owners report the black turning gray.

Everything in the box

Herculiner

$109.99 with brush, rollers and handle; the widest temperature window here (32–95°F) and a 24-hour full cure. Trade-offs: solvent-based, and owner results run from one year to eight.

Water-based kit

Dupli-Color Bed Armor

$134.36 for a gallon kit with roller, tray, brush and scuff pad. Heavy duty at 48 hours, plus a matching aerosol for corners. Plan on 2–3 coats; beds over 6 ft need an extra quart.

Sun and color

Monstaliner

Aliphatic, black or tintable, up to 40 dry mils in two rolled coats, $173 a gallon kit, with a 5-year guarantee against chalking or fading. Trade-offs: 7:1 mixing and a 7-day full cure.

Spray or roll

U-POL Raptor

2K polyurethane in black, tintable or white, sprayed or rolled; about 125 sq ft per 4 L kit ($234.99 black). Trade-offs: 7 days before regular use, and rolled coats build less.

Thickest film

Al's Liner

A 2-part urethane that builds from 1/32 to 1/8 inch. That costs coverage: at 44 sq ft per gallon, budget more than one $145 kit per bed. Needs 36-grit prep and etching primer on metal.

Want something other than black? Raptor and Monstaliner come tintable, Durabak 18 comes in 16 colors, and our bedliner colors guide covers sprayed liners too.

Cost

Roll-on vs spray-in bedliner cost

One gallon or kit of roll-on liner ran $79.99–$234.99 at retail in September 2026, before sandpaper, solvent and your weekend. Professional prices vary by region, truck and liner tier.

On those figures, a professional liner costs roughly 2 to 8 times what a single kit does. Whether that's worth it depends on how often you'd recoat and how hard the bed works; the chooser above runs that math with your numbers. For a fuller breakdown, see our spray-in bedliner cost guide.

Straight answers

Roll-on bedliner FAQ

What is the best roll-on bedliner?

It depends on the job. Rust-Oleum's Truck Bed Coating is the cheapest at $79.99 a gallon. Herculiner's $109.99 kit includes the tools and cures fully in 24 hours. For a truck parked in the sun, an aliphatic kit such as Monstaliner is the safer pick, and Al's Liner builds the thickest DIY film. No independent test we found ranks them all.

How much roll-on bedliner do I need?

About one gallon for a 5.5–6 ft bed in two coats, according to Herculiner, Dupli-Color and Monstaliner. For an 8 ft bed, Herculiner and Dupli-Color say to add a quart; Monstaliner says 1.5–2 gallons. Add about a quart to coat the rails. High-build kits such as Al's Liner, at 44 sq ft per gallon, need more.

How long does roll-on bedliner last?

Claims vary. Tractor Supply's Rust-Oleum listing says up to 4 years per application, Monstaliner guarantees 5 years against fading, and Durabak claims 10 to 15 years. Herculiner owners report anywhere from about one year to eight, with careful prep and a UV topcoat at the long end. Professional liners from LINE-X and Rhino carry lifetime warranties.

Is roll-on or spray-in bedliner better?

Spray-in is thicker: professional floors are typically 125 mils or more, against about 10–40 mils for most roll-on kits. Roll-on is cheaper and something you can do yourself. For light use or a truck you won't keep long, a well-prepped kit is a fair choice. For daily work, heavy loads or constant sun, spray-in is usually worth the extra cost.

How much Raptor liner do I need for an 8 ft bed?

U-POL says its 4 liter kit covers about 125 sq ft, which it calls enough for a full-size pickup bed, in two medium coats. If you roll instead of spraying, the film builds lower and U-POL says additional coats will be needed, so a 1 liter kit, about 30 sq ft, is a sensible backup for an 8 ft bed.

Can you roll Raptor bed liner, and what air pressure does it spray at?

Yes, you can roll it with an open textured roller, but rolling builds less film, so plan on extra coats. To spray, U-POL calls for 40–60 psi with a Schutz-style undercoating gun, about 45 psi with its Raptor gun or about 29 psi with an HVLP gun. Allow 60 minutes between coats at 68°F and 7 days before regular use.

How do you apply Herculiner, and when do you put on the second coat?

Clean off heavy dirt, scuff every painted surface and wipe the bed with xylene, acetone or MEK. Brush the corners and seams, roll the rest, then apply the second coat 1–4 hours after the first. Herculiner is dry to the touch in 2 hours and fully cured in 24. Apply it between 32°F and 95°F.

Can you paint over Herculiner?

Yes, with limits. Herculiner's FAQ says to use a polyurethane-based paint within 24 hours of the liner becoming dry to the touch, and never to use lacquer. If you've missed that window or simply want a color, a tintable liner such as Raptor or Monstaliner, or a colored professional liner, avoids painting over the texture.

Is Herculiner waterproof?

Herculiner doesn't publish a waterproof rating. It's a polyurethane truck bed coating, and like any coating it keeps water off the metal only where it's well bonded and unbroken; owners report peeling within a few years when prep was poor. For anything that holds water, choose a product whose maker rates it for that use.

Can you use bedliner in a spray can for a whole truck bed?

You can, but it takes a lot of cans. Dupli-Color's 16.5 oz Bed Armor aerosol covers about 25 sq ft, so a 60 sq ft short bed needs two to three cans per coat by our arithmetic. Dupli-Color positions the aerosol for corners, seams and touch-ups alongside its gallon kit, the more practical way to do a full bed.
