"Can cost more than double": ArmorThane polyurea guide

Black is the default bedliner color, but it isn't the only choice. A spray-in liner can be white, tan, bright orange or a close match for your paint. The catch is that the color only lasts if the chemistry under it can handle years of sun.

Quick answer

Most spray-in bedliners are black, but professional liners can be pigmented to almost any color, including white and your truck's paint code; Speedliner alone lists 11 factory colors. Common aromatic liners yellow, darken or chalk in sunlight. To keep a color, ask for an aliphatic liner or an aliphatic UV topcoat, though aliphatic material can cost more than double. Faded liner can be refreshed with a restorer or a UV topcoat. Pick a color and system or calculate DIY tint.

We make spray polyurea in Springfield, Missouri, and train the independent applicators who spray it. This guide sticks to what manufacturers publish and flags what we couldn't verify.

Color options

Spray-in bedliner colors: what's available

A spray-in liner gets its color from pigment mixed into the material before it's sprayed; ArmorLiner, for example, takes 100 grams of ArmorThane pigment per U.S. gallon. So your choices come down to what your applicator stocks and will mix. Rhino Linings' FAQ says to ask your local applicator what colors they spray.

The default

Black

The most common color. Black also has a UV edge: carbon black absorbs ultraviolet radiation that would otherwise degrade the material, which is why it's the default pigment for outdoor plastics.

Neutrals

Gray, tan and earth tones

Speedliner lists medium gray, dove gray, tan and olive drab; Durabak lists sand, tan and cream. They're still pigmented colors, so the UV advice for colored liners applies.

Light

White

Offered by Speedliner, Raptor, Durabak and Al's Liner. It reflects far more sunlight than black, but it's also where yellowing shows first. See white bedliners.

Custom

Brights and paint matches

Red, yellow, orange, blue and purple are on Speedliner's list. These are the liners Rhino means when it tells applicators that any liner sprayed with color needs a UV topcoat.

The chemistry

Why bedliners fade: aromatic vs aliphatic

Spray-in liners are made with isocyanates, and the type decides how the liner handles sunlight. Aromatic isocyanates contain chromophores, chemical groups that interact with light, and polyurethanes made with them "tend to darken on exposure to light." Aliphatic isocyanates (mainly HDI, IPDI and H12MDI) are used where color matters. Our polyurea guide says aromatic polyurea is "not light stable" and "will yellow and fade if exposed to UV radiation."

Does bedliner fade?

Most liners do, if they sit in the sun without protection. Rhino's restorer page puts it bluntly: "Unless you have an aliphatic bed liner or had a UV top coat applied, your liner will fade." That holds for polyurethane and polyurea liners alike.

The fading itself is cosmetic. ArmorThane's polyurea guide notes that the discoloration of aromatic polyurea "does not affect physical properties." A faded liner still protects the bed. More on aromatic polyurea.

Is black less likely to fade?

Probably, though no one has published a head-to-head test. Carbon black absorbs the UV that degrades the material, and Rhino singles out colored liners in its advice to applicators: "Any liner sprayed with color needs a UV topcoat. Without it, the color will fade over time." Black isn't immune, though; one Expedition Portal member describes a black Rust-Oleum liner that "grayed." We found no study on how many years fading takes, so be wary of any timeline you're quoted.

Ask before you pay for colorIs the liner aromatic or aliphatic? If aromatic, is an aliphatic UV topcoat included, and what does the warranty say about fading? Color and UV options depend on the system your applicator sprays, and that goes for ArmorThane applicators and ArmorLiner too.

Bedliner color chooser

Tell us the color you want and how much sun the bed will see. The chooser suggests a system, scores sun exposure and rates fading risk without UV protection.

Which bedliner color system should I ask for?

Built on Rhino Linings' colored-liner guidance, ArmorThane's polyurea guide and LBNL reflectance data. Ratings are relative, not a lab prediction.

How the scores work

Sun exposure adds parking (0–3), climate (0–2) and years (0–2). Fade risk adds a color factor: black 0, neutrals 1, white or brights 2, paint match 3.

Protecting the color

UV topcoats and aliphatic liners

There are three ways to handle color and sunlight.

Lowest cost

Aromatic liner, no topcoat

Sensible for a black work truck or a garage-kept truck. Expect color change after years of sun; a topcoat can come later.

Most common for color

Aromatic liner plus aliphatic topcoat

Many projects use "an aromatic base coat for performance and an aliphatic top coat for aesthetics," per ArmorThane's polyurea guide. Ultimate Linings notes polyaspartic topcoats work over aromatic polyurea too.

Highest material cost

Full aliphatic liner

Aliphatic chemistry holds color on its own; Rhino says its SolarMax, applied up to 1/8" thick, "does not require a UV topcoat." The trade-off: aliphatic material "can cost more than double."

LINE-X's Standard, Premium and MAX tiers all carry a Limited Lifetime Warranty, yet only Premium and MAX list UV protection. ArmorThane makes both routes, HighLine 410 aliphatic polyurea and STS ColorCoat topcoat; ask whether your applicator sprays them.

White and light colors

White bedliners: cooler, with caveats

Will a white bedliner run cooler than black? The physics points that way, though nobody we found has tested a bedliner directly. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's Heat Island Group reports a solar reflectance of about 0.05 for black paint and about 0.60 for white or silver. In its car tests, a silver car's roof ran "as much as 25°C (45°F) cooler than the roof on the black car," and raising the shell's reflectance by about 0.5 cut the cabin's soak temperature by about 9–11°F.

Roof data shows how dirt eats into that. A clean bright-white roof runs only about 9°F above air temperature on a summer afternoon, while a standard gray one runs 69°F above. After three years of weathering, the white roof's reflectance fell to 0.65 and it ran 28°F above air.

No bedliner test that we could findThese figures come from car paint and roofing research (LBNL, 2009 and 2011). We found no published test comparing white and black bedliner surface temperatures, and the roof data shows that dirt and age cut the benefit.

Keeping a white bedliner white

Yellowing is easiest to see on white. Aromatic polyurea yellows in UV, and Al's Liner warns a white liner can yellow if a low-quality pigment is used; its white pigments run $150–$300 a pint. SEM markets Rock-It XC Tintable as a "non-yellowing formula," and Speedliner lists white "with top coat #6." For a white liner that lives outdoors, ask for an aliphatic system or an aliphatic UV topcoat.

Paint-code matching

Color-matched bedliners: how matching works

A color-matched bedliner is pigmented or topcoated to your factory paint code. LINE-X technicians "can match any color code" with its XTRA topcoat. Rhino liners "can be pigmented to match virtually any color code," and its UV Top Coat handles "even pearls and metallics." Speedliner says custom matches are "available from most automotive paint dealers," and ArmorThane's STS ColorCoat asks you to "Specify OEM Paint Code."

  1. Find your paint code

It's on the vehicle's paint label, often in the driver's door jamb. A shop mixes to the code, not a photo.

  2. Ask which layer carries the color

Some systems pigment the liner, some put the color in a topcoat, and some do both.

  3. Confirm the UV protection

The color layer should be aliphatic or sealed under an aliphatic UV topcoat. A match that fades stops matching.

  4. See a sample

A textured liner can read differently from smooth, glossy paint, so look at a sprayed sample in daylight.

  5. Get it in writing

Put the paint code, liner, topcoat and any warranty language about fading on the quote.

Tintable bedliner: DIY color options

For a liner you roll or spray yourself, color comes from a factory-colored product or a tintable base mixed with tint. Not every DIY liner can be tinted: Rust-Oleum's truck bed coating says "Do not thin or tint," Dupli-Color Bed Armor comes in black satin only, and Herculiner Original is black.

Raptor tint dose: data sheet vs resellerU-POL's data sheet calls for one 45 ml pouch per 750 ml bottle, about 60 ml per liter. Raptor Liner USA / Pros Distributing says a "24oz RAPTOR Bottle requires 3oz of Pure Tint," roughly twice as much, and sells 6 oz tints at $65 ($55 for black) in 16 colors. When they disagree, follow the manufacturer's data sheet.

A DIY liner is a fair choice for a work truck or a budget build; just remember that tint changes the color, not the chemistry. See our roll-on bedliner guide.

Fixing a faded liner

How to restore a faded bedliner

A faded, chalky or gray liner is usually fixable without stripping anything. Start by working out the cause.

What you seeLikely causeWhat fixes it
Black liner looks gray, dull or chalkyUV on an aromatic linerClean, then a restorer; or an aliphatic UV topcoat for a longer fix
A colored liner has fadedNo UV topcoatAliphatic color topcoat, matched to the original or your paint code

Worn through, cracked or peelingWear or damage, not UVRepair or resurfacing by an applicator
Causes from Rhino Linings, Hanson Co., ArmorThane's polyurea guide and Al's Liner.
  1. Confirm it's cosmetic

If the liner is intact and only the color changed, it's appearance, not protection. Cracks, peeling or bare metal need a repair first.

  2. Clean it well

Wash, degrease, rinse and let the bed dry completely.

  3. Quick refresh: a restorer

Rhino Shine Ultra is "formulated to restore the look of ANY sprayed-on polyurethane/polyurea lining." We found no published figure for how long a restorer lasts, so treat it as maintenance.

  4. Longer fix: a UV topcoat

An aliphatic topcoat goes over the old liner. STS ColorCoat mixes 3:1, goes on by brush, resin-core roller or HVLP gun, and can be mixed to an OEM paint code. Rhino offers UV Repair formulations, and LINE-X lists a ReNew resurfacing system (details unverified).

  5. DIY liner? Paint it

Herculiner says to use a "polyurethane based paint," not lacquer, "within 24 hours of the Herculiner becoming dry to the touch." After that, lightly sand and clean first.

What about a heat gun? Some owners heat a faded liner to darken it. We found no manufacturer or independent source for or against the practice, so it isn't in our steps.

Once it's restored, a bed cover or garage parking cuts the liner's time in the sun, and a UV topcoat is the lasting fix if the truck lives outside.

The aliphatic premium is for material, not an installed price, and it helps explain why many projects pair an aromatic base with an aliphatic topcoat. ArmorThane applicators

Colored bedliners from certified applicators

ArmorThane-certified applicators spray ArmorThane polyurea systems. ArmorLiner, our spray-on bedliner, is a two-component, 1:1, 100% solids, fast-set polyurea. Our spray-on bedliner page describes an expansive range of colors, not just basic black, plus custom mixes.

For color that has to face the sun, we also make HighLine 410 aliphatic polyurea and STS ColorCoat aliphatic topcoat. Which systems a shop sprays varies, so ask about aliphatic and UV topcoat options when you get your quote.

Straight answers

Bedliner colors FAQ

What colors do spray-in bedliners come in?

Black is the most common, but professional liners can be pigmented to almost any color. Speedliner lists 11 factory colors, from black and dove gray to red, white and purple. LINE-X and Rhino Linings match paint codes, and Rhino says to ask your local applicator what colors they spray. Colored liners need an aliphatic system or UV topcoat to hold their color.

Can a spray-in bedliner be color matched to my truck's paint?

Yes. LINE-X says its technicians can match any color code with its XTRA topcoat, and Rhino says its liners can be pigmented to match virtually any color code, including pearls and metallics in its UV Top Coat. ArmorThane's STS ColorCoat is mixed to an OEM paint code. Bring your paint code and make sure the color has UV protection.

Does bedliner fade?

Most liners do if they sit in the sun without protection. Common aromatic liners yellow, darken, fade or chalk under UV, while aliphatic liners and aliphatic UV topcoats hold color and gloss. The fading is cosmetic: ArmorThane's polyurea guide notes that the discoloration of aromatic polyurea does not affect physical properties.

How long does it take for a bedliner to fade?

No manufacturer publishes a timeline, and we found no lab data giving years. It depends on the chemistry, whether there's a UV topcoat, the color and how much sun the bed gets. A garage-kept truck or a covered bed sees less sun, and so less fading, than one parked outside with the bed open.

Why does black bedliner turn gray, and how do I restore it?

Aromatic liners change color and chalk in sunlight, and owners report black liners going gray. If the liner is intact, it's cosmetic. Clean and degrease the bed, then use a restorer such as Rhino Shine Ultra for a quick refresh, or have an aliphatic UV topcoat such as STS ColorCoat applied for a longer fix.

What is the difference between aromatic and aliphatic bedliner?

Aromatic isocyanates contain chromophores that interact with light, so aromatic liners tend to yellow, darken and chalk in sun. Aliphatic liners hold color and gloss but can cost more than double in material. Many projects use an aromatic base for performance and an aliphatic topcoat for appearance; a full aliphatic liner like Rhino SolarMax needs no topcoat.

Can you paint over bedliner, and what paint should you use?

Yes. For a DIY liner, Herculiner says to use a polyurethane-based paint, not lacquer, within 24 hours of the liner becoming dry to the touch; after that, lightly sand and clean it first. For a professional liner, the usual route is an aliphatic polyurethane topcoat such as STS ColorCoat, applied by brush, roller or HVLP gun.

Which bedliners are tintable?

Raptor Tintable from U-POL, Monstaliner, Al's Liner and SEM Rock-It XC Tintable can all be tinted, and Durabak comes in 16 factory colors. Rust-Oleum's truck bed coating says do not thin or tint, Dupli-Color Bed Armor comes only in black satin, and Herculiner Original is black. Tint changes the color, not the UV resistance.

How much tint goes in Raptor bedliner?

U-POL's data sheet says to add one 1.5 fl oz (45 ml) color pouch per 750 ml bottle, with tint up to 10% by volume depending on color and typically 5% for good opacity. One reseller, Pros Distributing, says 3 oz per 24 oz bottle, roughly twice as much. When they disagree, follow the manufacturer's data sheet.

Is a white bedliner cooler than a black one?

Probably, based on paint and roof data, though we found no bedliner-specific test. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory reports solar reflectance of about 0.05 for black paint and 0.60 for white or silver, and a silver car's roof ran up to 45°F cooler than a black car's. Dirt and age cut the benefit.

Does a colored or UV-protected bedliner cost more?

It can, but pro brands don't publish the upcharge; Rhino says each applicator sets its own price. Speedliner's pro-applied MSRP is $650 to $850 depending on vehicle size and options, and aliphatic material can cost more than double aromatic. On the DIY side, Durabak's specialty colors add $10 to $30 per gallon.
