ArmorThane cost guide, 2026

Bed liner paint is the cheapest way to put a textured, grippy, rust-resistant skin on a truck bed, a bumper or an entire vehicle. It is also thin. How well it works comes down to which of the three formats you buy, how well you prep, and what you plan to throw in the bed.

Quick answer

Bed liner paint is a textured urethane, polyurethane or acrylic coating sold in aerosol cans, roll-on gallons and 2K kits you spray with a schutz gun. Two coats build roughly 8–40 mils, against 80–125 mils for a pro spray-in. A 6.5-ft bed takes about one gallon or one 4-liter Raptor kit, $110–$263. It suits light use, rust-prone steel and whole-vehicle texture; daily hauling favors sprayed polyurea. Work out your quantity.

Who's writing: ArmorThane makes ArmorLiner spray polyurea in Springfield, Missouri, and trains the applicators who spray it. We don't sell these paints, so we can be plain about where it works and where it doesn't. What bed liner paint actually is

"Bedliner paint," "truck bed paint" and "truck liner paint" all mean a coating you apply yourself that dries to a textured, slightly rubbery film. A liner shop is different: it runs a heated, high-pressure plural-component rig that mixes polyurea at the gun and lays down a liner in one pass. Paint goes on in thin coats with a can, a roller or a cheap air gun.

The shelf sorts into three formats, and the format matters more than the brand: it decides how thick you can build and how forgiving the job is.

One-part or two-part?

Rust-Oleum's gallon and Dupli-Color Bed Armor are water-based (Dupli-Color adds Kevlar). Herculiner's original kit is a solvent-based polyurethane with rubber granules. Durabak is a one-part, moisture-cured polyurethane at 75.8% solids by volume. Raptor, Herculiner Pro and SEM are 2K urethanes: add hardener (3:1 for Raptor) and you get about 60 minutes of pot life at 68°F.

Two-part products cure harder and faster, and the hardener carries isocyanates. OSHA names occupational asthma as the main effect of hazardous exposure, so a 2K job means a fitted respirator, not a dust mask. Our urethane vs polyurethane explainer covers the naming mess.

Prices from makers and retailers (Ace, Tractor Supply, Walmart, Auto Body Toolmart), read October 2026; they move. Coverage and film from each maker's data sheet or product page. The $/sq ft column is our math: price ÷ two-coat coverage. Where a maker gives a range we show both ends. Herculiner's "one 6-ft bed" we read as about 68 sq ft.

Not in the table. Dupli-Color lists Bed Armor at 16–18 sq ft per quart and its 16.5 oz aerosol at 25 sq ft per can; we didn't verify current prices. SEM's Rock-It Liner covers 150 sq ft per gallon at 6–10 mils per coat. Al's Liner sells a 2-part urethane gallon for $145 plus a $24.95 gun but doesn't publish coverage there. We couldn't load KBS Coatings' spec page, so we left it out rather than guess.

The cheapest square foot is a roll-on gallon from Herculiner or Rust-Oleum. The thickest film per dollar is Durabak or Monstaliner. Aerosols cost the most and build the least, so they belong on rails and touch-ups.

Bed areas are our estimates (floor and walls plus about 5% for wheel wells) from our truck bed dimensions guide; measure your bed for a tighter number. The 120 sq ft exterior default follows Durabak's guidance of about 2 gallons (60 sq ft each) for a regular-cab F-150 or Tacoma exterior. The Raptor kit uses U-POL's data-sheet coverage, about 90 sq ft in two coats, not the 125 sq ft a retailer quotes. Rust-Oleum aerosol coverage is treated as per coat.

The real difference

Bedliner paint vs professional spray-in

The gap is thickness, and it is large. Raptor's two-coat film is 18.7 mils. Durabak's is 29–39. Monstaliner tops out around 40. A pro applicator typically sprays 80–125 mils, and Rhino says its liners start at 1/8 inch, which is 125 mils. Drawn to scale, the difference looks like this.

Thickness isn't everything: a well-bonded 20-mil film outlasts a poorly bonded 100-mil one, and thin paint is easy to recoat. But thickness is what absorbs a dropped engine block or a scoop of gravel. Once the film wears through, bare steel starts rusting under the edges.

Paint or pro: what it costs over the years you keep the truck

A $110 kit looks cheap next to a $600 liner. The fair comparison runs over the years you'll own the truck, counting every re-coat and, if you like, your own hours.

Light use, Herculiner 1-gal kit. About 1.13 kits per job at $125 each in material. For weekend loads, paint is the cheaper way to keep the bed covered. Recoat as soon as the floor shows wear through to primer or steel.

"Years per paint job" is your assumption. For reference, Rust-Oleum's retail listing says one application "can last up to 4 years" and Durabak claims 10–15 years; both are vendor claims. The 8-hour default is our estimate. The tool counts a pro liner once.

The decision

Is bed liner paint worth it?

Often, yes. A $110–$160 gallon kit is a fair trade for a truck that hauls coolers and the odd bag of mulch. It stops scratches turning into rust, adds grip, and you can roll another coat on a Saturday. It's the wrong buy when the bed takes real abuse every week.

Paint is enough

Light, occasional loads

  • Weekend hauling, camping gear, coolers
  • Older truck where $600 is out of proportion
  • Rails, bumpers, steps and trailer fenders
  • You'll happily recoat every few years
Pay for spray-in

Daily abuse

  • Gravel, rock, scrap, firewood, tools sliding
  • Equipment dropped in from a loader or tailgate
  • New truck you plan to keep 10 years
  • You want one job and a warranty
Either works

It depends on prep

  • Rust protection on a sound bed
  • Matching a color: tintable paint or a pro color match
  • Whole-vehicle texture (see below)
  • Covering a worn but bonded old liner
Already have an old liner?Paint bonds to a sound, scuffed liner but won't fix one that's lifting. Test it first with the steps in our bedliner removal guide, then decide whether to strip, patch or recoat.
Where jobs succeed or fail

Prep: over existing paint, bare metal or rust

One Expedition Portal member put it bluntly: "80% of a good job is proper prep." In Project Farm's roll-on test, as summarized by Durabak (a vendor in the test), Raptor pulled off bare steel at 48 lb but held 425 lb over primer. Same coating, nine times the grip.

Bedliner paint over existing paint

Fine, if the paint is sound. Degrease, scuff every glossy spot, blow off dust and wipe with the solvent the maker names (xylene for Durabak, wax and grease remover for most others). Don't coat peeling clear coat; the liner lifts with it.

Bedliner paint over rust

The most common mistake. NAPA warns that this paint "does not stop or repair existing rust." Grind scale and flaking rust back to firm metal, treat the rest with a converter the coating maker approves, prime, then coat; Durabak's FAQ gives the same order. Holes need welding or a patch panel first. Our truck bed rust repair guide covers when a bed is worth saving, and this rust repair article shows the sprayed route.

Don't trap waterCoating over active rust seals moisture in. The film looks fine for a season, then bubbles from underneath and lets go in sheets.
Application

How to apply bed liner paint

The order is the same for every format. The weather window, pot life and recoat time change.

  1. Check the weather window

U-POL calls 68°F and under 60% humidity ideal for Raptor; its aerosol wants 41–77°F. Dupli-Color says 60–95°F. Herculiner and Durabak allow 32–95°F, though Durabak warns that 70%+ humidity causes bubbling.

  2. Strip the bed and mask hard

Pull the tailgate if you can, remove tie-downs and bed bolts, and mask lights and paint. 2K overspray travels; plastic-sheet the cab.

  3. Wash, scuff, wipe

Degrease, sand to the grit above, blow out the seams and solvent-wipe. Fix rust now. Prime bare metal and use adhesion promoter on plastics.

  4. Mix only what you'll use

Raptor is 3:1 with about 60 minutes of pot life; SEM Rock-It gives 30. Monstaliner claims up to 8 hours. One-part products need a long stir; O'Reilly's Bed Armor walkthrough stirs for 10 minutes.

  5. Cut in, then coat

Brush seams, corners and bolt holes first, then roll in small sections or spray overlapping passes. Raptor's gun runs 45–50 psi for coarse texture, 60–65 psi for medium.

  6. Wait the recoat window, then coat again

Raptor wants 60 minutes between coats, Dupli-Color 3 hours, Durabak 1–24 hours at light tack. Durabak warns heavy coats "trap the curing gasses and leave pinholes."

  7. Pull tape early, then leave it alone

Untape while the last coat is soft. Light use ranges from 24 hours (Herculiner) to 48 hours (SEM, Monstaliner); Raptor wants 7 days before heavy use.

Aerosol (rattle can) tips

  • Warm cans in water so they atomize evenly
  • Activate a 2K can only when ready; Raptor's lasts about an hour
  • Two coats minimum; Raptor's aerosol is sprayed from 2–3 feet
  • Plan on 5–7 cans for a full 6.5-ft bed, which is why gallons win

Schutz gun tips

  • Bottles thread straight onto the gun; no cup to clean
  • Lower pressure and more distance give a coarser texture
  • Clean with lacquer thinner straight after; soap won't touch it
  • Do a test panel to dial in texture before the bed
Applicator spraying a textured truck bedliner coating, the sprayed alternative to rolled bed liner paint
Spraying gives a more even texture than rolling, whichever product is in the gun.
Respirator, not a dust mask2K hardeners contain isocyanates. Engineers Who Van Life, who sprayed Raptor on their van, list gloves, goggles and a respirator mask as the minimum. Spray outdoors or with real ventilation, and keep kids and pets away until it's dry.
Durability

How long bed liner paint lasts and what fails first

No independent study tracks these coatings over years, so treat every lifespan number as a vendor claim. Here is what the makers say.

Rust-Oleum gallon
4 yr
Monstaliner no-fade
5 yr
Durabak claimed
10–15 yr

Vendor claims, not test results: Rust-Oleum via Tractor Supply's listing, Monstaliner's feature sheet, Durabak's FAQ; read October 2026. Bars show the high end.

Real life depends on the floor more than the label. Walls and rails can look new for years while the floor between the wheel wells wears through where cargo slides, so recoating just the floor every couple of years is normal.

The four ways it fails

Most common

Peeling in sheets

Poor adhesion: skipped scuffing, no primer on bare steel, or rust underneath. It starts at an edge and keeps going.

Heavy use

Wear-through on the floor

Twenty to forty mils don't survive shoveled gravel for long. Bare spots appear on rib tops first.

Sun

Fading and chalking

Durabak says its indoor version discolors in sun; buy the UV or aliphatic version for outdoor work.

Application

Pinholes and soft spots

Coats too heavy, too cold or too humid. Gas gets trapped, or the film never fully cures.

Repairs are where paint earns its keep: scuff the worn area, feather the edges and roll another coat. For a color that won't fade, our bedliner colors guide explains why aromatic coatings darken and which topcoats prevent it.

Beyond the bed

Whole-truck bedliner paint jobs

The Raptor-style full-body job, a truck, Jeep or van coated stem to stern in textured liner, is mostly a DIY paint project. It shrugs off trail scratches and parking-lot dings, costs less than a quality repaint and looks purpose-built. Wikipedia notes that better color choice has made coating whole exteriors "more popular."

Durabak, "How Much Bed Liner Do I Need For My Truck" (Mar. 2018), textured, two coats at about 60 sq ft per gallon. Durabak's smooth exterior method covers 75–80 sq ft per gallon. Crew cabs and SUVs need more; add bumpers and rockers in the calculator.

Sprayed 2K texture wastes more. U-POL's data sheet works out to about 21.5 sq ft per activated quart in two coats, so a 120 sq ft exterior needs a little over one 4-liter kit before overspray; most people buy two. A Raptor 2-gallon kit with gun was $325 at Raptor Liner USA when we checked.

What a pro full-body job costs

Nobody publishes a price list, so these are dated owner reports. An IH8MUD member was quoted $4,000–$5,000 by LINE-X in April 2018, with the owner removing trim and lights. On Expedition Portal in December 2015, one owner had a $6,000 LINE-X quote against $1,300 from an independent shop. Engineers Who Van Life put the pro route for a van at $4,000–$6,000 against about $200 in Raptor (2023). Ask an applicator near you for a current number.

Why people love it

  • Scratches from brush and branches don't show
  • Dings and rock chips don't flake it
  • Spot repairs blend with a can or roller
  • Material costs a fraction of a quality repaint

What owners warn about

  • Washing it is "like washing 120 grit sandpaper," one IH8MUD owner wrote
  • Mud can stain textured surfaces; red pigments fade faster
  • It hides rust forming underneath; prep matters even more
  • It narrows the resale market, and it's very hard to remove

Tintable bedliner paint and color matching

Raptor Tintable takes up to 10% tint depending on color, and U-POL says it "delivers a high level of fade resistance." Monstaliner sells a tintable kit with color concentrates and a 5-year no-fade guarantee. Durabak 18 comes in 16 colors. On sprayed polyurea, applicators match paint codes with an aliphatic topcoat; ours is STS ColorCoat. Off-road builds lean on this most; see our Jeep bedliner work.

Bed liner paint FAQ

What is bed liner paint?

Bed liner paint is a textured protective coating you apply yourself from an aerosol can, a roller or a schutz gun. Products range from water-based acrylics and polyurethanes to one-part moisture-cured urethanes and two-part urethanes such as U-POL Raptor. Two coats typically build about 8–40 mils, much thinner than a professional spray-in liner at 80–125 mils.

Is bedliner paint worth it?

For light and occasional use, yes. A $110–$160 gallon kit protects paint from scratches, adds grip and can be recoated on a weekend. For daily work hauling gravel, tools or firewood, the thin film wears through on the floor, and a professional spray-in at about $525–$700 usually costs less than repeated paint jobs over the years you own the truck.

How long does bed liner paint last?

It depends on prep and use, and only vendor claims exist. Rust-Oleum's retail listing says its gallon "can last up to 4 years," Monstaliner guarantees 5 years against fading, and Durabak claims a 10–15 year service life. In practice the floor between the wheel wells wears first, so plan to recoat that area every few years on a working truck.

How much bed liner paint do I need for a truck bed?

A 6.5-ft bed is roughly 70 sq ft of floor and walls, our estimate. That's about one Herculiner gallon kit, a little over one Durabak gallon at 60 sq ft per gallon, or one 4-liter Raptor kit. An 8-ft bed needs an extra quart or more. Aerosols are impractical for whole beds: expect 5–7 cans for two coats.

Can you put bedliner paint over existing paint?

Yes, if the paint is sound. Wash and degrease, then scuff until no glossy areas remain: U-POL specifies P180–320 for painted surfaces and Durabak 80 grit. Blow off the dust and wipe with the maker's recommended solvent. Don't coat over peeling clear coat or flaking paint, because the liner will lift with it.

Can you apply bedliner paint over rust?

Not over loose or active rust. NAPA warns that liner paint does not stop existing rust, and coating over it traps moisture. Remove scale and flaking rust back to firm metal, treat the remainder with a converter the coating maker approves, prime bare steel, then coat. Rusted-through holes need welding or a patch panel first.

Can you paint a whole truck with bedliner?

Yes, and many owners do. Durabak estimates about 3 gallons for a regular-cab F-150 including the bed, and gun-applied 2K products like Raptor give the most even texture. Remove trim and lights, sand everything, use adhesion promoter on plastics and spray two thin coats. Expect harder washing, possible staining, and a narrower resale market.

How much does a full-body bedliner paint job cost?

DIY materials run from a few hundred dollars to around $1,000 depending on product and vehicle size. Professional full-body work isn't published; owners have reported LINE-X quotes of $4,000–$5,000 (2018) and $6,000 (2015), and an independent shop quote of $1,300. Disassembly and color matching drive the price, so get a current local quote.

Is spray-on bedliner paint from an aerosol can any good?

Aerosol bedliner spray paint is good for touch-ups, rails, steps and small parts. It's poor value for a whole bed. Rust-Oleum's 15 oz can covers 15–20 sq ft, and U-POL's Raptor 2K aerosol builds only about 7.9 mils in two coats over roughly 14 sq ft. A gallon or kit costs less per square foot and builds more film.

Can bedliner paint be tinted to match my truck?

Some can. U-POL Raptor Tintable accepts up to 10% tint depending on color, and Monstaliner sells a tintable kit with color concentrates and a 5-year no-fade guarantee. Durabak 18 comes in 16 colors. For an exact paint-code match on a sprayed liner, applicators use an aliphatic topcoat such as ArmorThane's STS ColorCoat.

What is the difference between bedliner paint and a professional spray-in liner?

Thickness, chemistry and equipment. Bedliner paint goes on in thin coats with cans, rollers or a schutz gun and builds about 8–40 mils. A professional liner is usually 100% solids polyurea sprayed hot from a plural-component rig at 80–125 mils, tack-free in minutes. Paint costs less upfront; spray-in lasts longer under heavy use.

How long before I can use my truck bed after painting it?

It depends on the product. Herculiner says its liner fully cures in 24 hours, SEM and Monstaliner allow light use after 48 hours, Durabak reaches full cure in about 4 days, and U-POL recommends 7 days before heavy use of Raptor. Cold or humid weather stretches every one of those times.
