PROTECTING YOUR WORLD

WHAT IS POLYUREA &
HOW DOES IT WORK

WHAT IS POLYUREA?

Polyurea is a lining, coating, and joint sealant technology all in one. It is produced by combining isocyanate with amine resin in a chemical process. This reaction usually happens within a few seconds. One of the strongest protective polymers on the market, polyurea boasts an industry-leading tensile strength. ArmorThane’s specially blended material can endure over 30 years with the right conditions and upkeep before it needs retouching, repairs, or replacement.  In addition, polyurea’s physical characteristics after curing make it among the best available coatings for protection.

Polyurea is an elastomer material procured from step-growth polymerization, which involves combining synthetic resin and reactive isocyanate materials. Thus, the result of an isocyanate part with a resin blend part through the step-growth method of polymerization produces polyurea. Various formulations of resins and isocyanates can produce the desired setting time, water resistance, pigmentation, flame-hindering qualities, and other unique characteristics.

A hybrid coating is a polyurea blended in polyurethane in calculated proportions. The hybrid coating presents specific physical properties of pure polyurea at a lower price than pure polyurea alone.

HOW AND
WHERE IS IT USED?

All spray coatings are applied in a similar way using high or low pressure spray systems, however longer gel-time formulations can be applied with rollers. Altering the formulation enables customization for a specific application.

Applicators successfully employ polyurea in a variety of applications. There are numerous application areas that benefit from polyurea’s properties, such as roofs, floors, bridges, concrete structures, steel structures and more.

Most are commercial, solvent free, plural component products. What is a plural component product? This means that when the two parts are combined together they become a solid in seconds and therefore cannot be pre-mixed together and applied with a hopper gun or rolled on. Most are solid in less than 20 seconds and are ready to walk on in 5 minutes or less and would solidify inside traditional application equipment in seconds. Therefore, plural component application equipment is required to mix the product at the moment it is atomized and applied to the substrate, and ArmorThane offers many different models and types of plural component equipment to meet your specific application needs.
ArmorThane also offers other types of coatings that are not plural component types. One example is ArmorFloor, a specially formulated, slow cured polyester/aspartic polyurethane that is easily rolled on the concrete substrate.
