Polyurea and polyurethane technology have become almost ubiquitous in countless industrial applications, capable of coating nearly any surface to provide robust protection against weathering and abrasion. For over 35 years, ArmorThane has been a leading manufacturer of specialty polyurea and polyurethane formulations that offer unmatched resistance against strong physical impacts, harsh abrasion, and corrosive chemicals. Unlike the big chemical companies, polyurea and polyurethane technology is our speciality, and our role as a polyurea manufacturer is accompanied with decades of industry expertise providing full-suite polyurea systems that range from manufacturing to applicator training. With over 50 different coatings using both pure and hybrid formulations, we’re your one-stop-shop for everything polyurea products.
Polyurea is manufactured by multiple companies in the specialty chemicals and materials industry with expertise in advanced polymer formulations. Companies like ArmorThane manufacture a range of different polyurea formulations for various industries, leveraging powerful chemistries to engineer the highest quality coating technology.
Polyurethane and polyurea have similar names that reflect their closely related chemical structures, which results in both materials also exhibiting similar physical properties. Both materials are elastomers used for protective coatings, but polyurea cures faster, offers better moisture resistance, and displays superior durability compared to polyurethane for most applications.
Crazing refers to the formation of small cracks in the surface of the coating due to shrinkage after application. Micro-fracturing involves deeper cracks caused by increased coating stress due to the expansion or contraction of substrate materials beneath it.
The best way to prevent polyurea coatings from cracking is to prepare them carefully before application and properly cure afterward. For example, make sure that all surfaces are clear from dirt, dust, grease, oil stains, etc., before applying the coating, as these can cause adhesion failure, which could lead to cracking down the line. Also, be aware that some substrates are prone to absorption when wetted: if dampness has occurred from snow melt or rainfall, for example, then additional time should be taken for adequate drying before application so as not to risk shrinkage during cure time later on, which could again result in craze cracking over time. Finally, ensure that you follow your manufacturer’s instructions and adhere strictly to their recommended drying times for optimal performance; any deviations here will also strain your polyurea.
When applied correctly and properly cared for, polyurea & polyurethane coatings can last more than 25 years. The same exceptional weathering and abrasion resistance that affords their widespread use is also responsible for their long lifetime, protecting surfaces for decades after application.
Polyurea coatings can be applied to almost any surface, including metal, concrete, and fiberglass, perfect for coating a wide range of different structures and equipment. This versatility has seen polyurea applied across countless industries, from automotive and agricultural to construction and even military.
ArmorThane is a manufacturer of polyurea that has built a strong reputation over the past 35 years offering solutions for high-quality, durable industrial coatings, top coats, primers, spray foam, and equipment. Contact us today for our full product range.
