SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM SHUTDOWN PROCEDURES
As a business owner or manager you know how important it is to keep your equipment in good shape to extend its life. This is especially true for your proportioner, a spray foam and coating application component. Shutting down your proportioner whether for a break or an extended period is critical to prevent damage or operational issues. Let’s get into the steps and protocols for shutting down your proportioner for short term and long term. Follow these and you will avoid repairs, wear and tear, and downtime.
These will keep your proportioner in good working order. Follow these three steps to shut down your proportioner.
Before you shut down the proportioner, transition the machine to the retracted position and pull the trigger on the gun until you get to 500psi.
Before proceeding with the shutdown process, it is recommended to first close the material valves located on the spray gun. Following this, it is advisable to drill the tip of the gun while ensuring that the air supply remains on. At this point, it is necessary to apply grease to the fitting.
Before you power down the proportioner, be sure to move the machine to the retract position and gradually lower the pressure by squeezing the trigger on the gun until there are about 500 psi left.
For long-term shutdowns, such as when the proportioner will not be used for an extended period, it is crucial to take additional steps to preserve the equipment properly:
To keep the system running optimal and prevent the ISO side from crystallizing during downtime you must follow the purging and storage procedures. This means flush the ISO side of the system out completely. You must wear proper PPE during this process.
To keep the proportioner running optimal for future use you should proactively remove, clean or replace screens to prevent debris or contamination from building up. This will keep the proportioner free from any obstructions or negative effects on its performance.

Coil up the linset and cover the proportioner neatly to keep it clean and protected from the elements and prolong the life of your machine. grease to the designated grease points on the machine to ensure proper lubrication. Additionally, neatly coil up the linset and securely cover the proportioner to provide protection from external elements and maintain its cleanliness, and prolong the life of your machine.
These videos are to help you learn how to operate and maintain our equipment. Whether short or long term shutdowns the videos show how to release pressure, flush the system, clean the gun and hoses, and lubricate moving parts. Also they cover storing the proportioner, using covers and a controlled environment. Watch all videos to make sure you know all the steps.
The video highlights the need to use drum heaters to keep materials at the right temperature. It covers the risks of freezing drums – changes in viscosity, reduced spray efficiency and damage to the proportioner. It also shows you how to position and set up drum heaters and how to protect the materials and equipment. Follow the advice in the video and you’ll avoid product waste, equipment failure and weather related problems and get your coatings and foams to apply.
This video shows you how to get the equipment setup, pressures adjusted and started. It also shows you to check the lines and connections. Look at all parts for any issues. This video also covers startup problems like air in the system or inconsistent material flow. Follow this video and you’ll be ready to start using your polyurea equipment for great results.
Follow the short and long term shutdown steps to protect your asset and your investment. Maintenance and proper shutdown will extend the life of your equipment. Keep it running for years to come. Check the manufacturers instructions for shutdown procedures and follow the recommended maintenance schedule for your proportioner. If you need help just give us a call.
